PAIN MANAGEMENT

Finding safer ways to help people manage pain
without the fear of opioid addiction.

Pain affects everyone at some point. Surgery. An injury or accident. Even chronic back or arthritis pain can call for some form of pain management. Open Kansas is working to make sure Kansans have the education and resources to find a pain management plan that’s right for them, whether that involves safe opioid treatments or non-opioid alternatives. Here’s what to know about both.

OPIOD PAIN MANAGEMENT

Opioids are either derived from, or chemically similar to compounds found in opium poppies. These strong pain medications are typically prescribed for acute pain management after surgery and some dental procedures, usually for a period of one to three days. Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, dizziness, and constipation. If used outside of recommended guidelines, opioids can be addictive. Always follow your doctor’s instructions when using opioids.

NON-OPIOD PAIN MANAGEMENT

Fortunately, there are also many non-opioid treatments available for pain. These include prescription and over-the counter aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen. Keep in mind, though, medication is usually just one part of a pain-management plan. Other nondrug treatments may include massage, acupuncture, and high-tech treatments using radio waves and electrical signals. Your medical professional will know how to build a personal plan to help relieve pain and speed healing.
